This Torah portion contains several unusual features:
In addition, we learn about the first three times “the glory of Adonai” appeared to the Israelites, and we discover something fascinating about the deaths of Nadav and Avihu.
This is the only Torah portion whose name is a number.
Leviticus 9:4 “… and an ox and a ram for peace offerings, to sacrifice before Adonai, and a grain offering mixed with oil, for today Adonai will appear to you.”
נראה (nir’ah)
הארן (ha’aron) = “the Ark”
Leviticus 9:6 And Moses said, “This is the thing that Adonai commanded you to do, that the glory of Adonai may appear to you.”
כבוד יהוה (cavod Adonai)
1st app. – Exodus 16:7,10 – The giving of manna
2nd app. – Exodus 24:16-17 – The giving of the Torah
3rd app. – Leviticus 9:6,23 – The giving of the priests
Leviticus 10:1 Now Nadav and Avihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it and laid incense on it and offered unauthorized fire before Adonai, which He had not commanded them.
…אשר לא צוה אתם: (asher lo tzivah otam)
לא = “not” or “No!”
Deuteronomy 17:2-3 [ESV] “If there is found among you, within any of your towns that Adonai your God is giving you, a man or woman who does what is evil in the sight of Adonai your God, in transgressing His covenant, and has gone and served other gods and worshiped them, or the sun or the moon or any of the host of heaven, which I have forbidden…”
אשר לא צויתי (asher lo tziviti)
Leviticus 10:2 And fire came out from before Adonai and consumed them, and they died before Adonai.
ותצא אש מלפני יהוה ותאכל … (vateitzei esh miliphnei Adonai vatochal)

Leviticus 9:24 And fire came out from before Adonai and consumed the burnt offering and the pieces of fat on the altar, and when all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces.
Leviticus 10:16 Now Moses diligently inquired about the goat of the sin offering …
… דרש דרש … (darosh darash) = The two middle words of the Torah
Leviticus 11:42 Whatever goes on its belly, and whatever goes on all fours, or whatever has many feet, any swarming thing that swarms on the ground, you shall not eat, for they are detestable.
גחון (gachon) = The middle letter of the Torah
ו (vav) = “hook” = ואו = 6 + 1 + 6 = 13
= אחד (echad) = “one”
Leviticus 11:47 To make a distinction between the unclean and the clean and between the living creature that may be eaten and the living creature that may not be eaten.
= 2166 =
Numbers 8:14 “Thus you shall separate the Levites from among the people of Israel, and the Levites shall be Mine.”
