RESOURCES

The Bible was not written in a vacuum. It assumes that the reader is familiar with Jewish thought and logic, Hebraic figures of speech, extra-biblical Jewish writings, and, most of all, the Torah itself. We live in a time when there is an abundance of resources to assist the Bible student in all these areas. Following are some titles from Beth Tikkun Publishing, which is the publishing arm of Torah Today Ministries.

Other Recommended Reading

The Hirsch Tehillim

Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch

Whenever I want to take a deep dive into the meaning of a Hebrew word of phrase, I go to the works of R’ Hirsch. His works on Chumash (Torah), and other books of the Tanach are invaluable, and I rely heavily on his commentary on the Psalms for the series. Tehillim Talks. Rabbi Hirsch was a German orthodox rabbi who lived from 1808 to 1888. He was a prolific writer whose influence is felt still today. His commentary on the Psalms is 1180 pages of brilliance and a little knowledge of Hebrew will go a long way in helping the reader to make the most of it.

The Concordant Literal Translation of the Old Testament & The New Testament

The Concordant Literal Translation of the Bible is far and away the most literal English translation available today. The O.T. and N.T. must be purchased as separate volumes and will prove to be indispensable to the serious student. These are also available to read for free online at the link below.

Etymological Dictionary of Biblical Hebrew

R’ Matityahu Clark

For the student interested in doing Hebrew word studies, R’ Clark’s Etymological Dictionary is a must. This book provides concise definitions for each three-letter Hebrew verb root in the Bible. These insights are based on R’ Samson Raphael Hirsch’s extensive commentaries on the Torah and Tanach. This is a truly invaluable resource.

The Stone Chumash

Artscroll

A Chumash (meaning ‘five’) contains the five books of the Torah. The Stone Chumash is particularly valuable in that it also contains Targum Onkelos (an Aramaic translation of the Torah), an excellent English translation, and Jewish commentary dating back to the first century. It also includes the Haftarah portions and the Five Megillot in both Hebrew and English, illustrations, charts, and more. Artscroll produces its Chumash in a number of formats to suit the reader’s lifestyle.
