The SUNDAY Psalm

Of David. A Psalm

1-2    The earth is Adonai’s, and all it contains; the world, and those who dwell in it. ² For He has founded it upon the seas, and upon the rivers He established it.

תבל (teivel) from בלל (balal) = “confusion”

3-6      Who may ascend into the hill of Adonai? And who may stand in the place of His holiness? ⁴ (a) He who has clean hands and (b) a pure heart, (c) who has not lifted up My/[his?] soul to vanity, and (d) has not sworn deceitfully. ⁵ He shall receive a blessing from Adonai and righteousness/charity from the God of his salvation. ⁶ This is the generation of those who seek Him, who seek Your face – even [the people of] Jacob. Selah.

צדקה(tzedakah) = “righteousness.charity”

1^st Advent:

7-8     Lift up your heads, O gates, and be lifted up, O everlasting portals, that the King of glory may come in! ⁸ Who is this King of glory? Adonai strong and mighty, Adonai mighty in battle.

2^nd Advent:

9-10    Lift up your heads, O gates, and lift them up, O everlasting portals, that the King of glory may come in! ¹⁰ Who then is this King of glory? Adonai of hosts, He is the King of glory. Selah.

Psalm 115:16 The heavens are Adonai’s heavens, but the earth He has given to the children of man.

Leviticus 18:23  And you shall not lie with any animal and so make yourself unclean with it, neither shall any woman give herself to an animal to lie with it: it is perversion [תבל, teivel].

Leviticus 20:12  If a man lies with his daughter-in-law, both of them shall surely be put to death; they have committed perversion [תבל, teivel]; their blood is upon them.

Genesis 11:9  Therefore its name was called Bavel [בבל], because there Adonai confused [בלל, balal] the language of all the earth. And from there Adonai dispersed them over the face of all the earth.

Verse 4

Psalm 19:8  The precepts of Adonai are right, rejoicing the heart. The commandment of Adonai is pure [בר,var], enlightening the eyes.

Matthew 5:8  “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”

Psalm 26:4  I do not sit with men of vanity [שוא, shav], nor do I consort with hypocrites.

Verse 5

“When God does tzedakah, He bestows favor on His creatures out of His grace, not on account of their merit…[Tzedakah means] to give the other person what he needs, to be good to him, to seek his welfare and well-being. Tzedek rectifies the world and promotes the happiness of the individual and the community. Through the attribute of Tzedek, every creature will have the benefit of the conditions intended for it by Divine design. Tzedek is the goal of God’s direction of the world. From man’s point of view, tzedek is the ideal. Any Divine or human act that brings the individual or the community nearer to this goal is tzedakah. Tzedek is required for tzedakah, and tzedakah leads to tzedek.” (R’ Samson Raphael Hirsch, The Hirsch Chumash, Genesis 15:6)

Deuteronomy 16:20  Justice, justice [צדק  צדק, tzedek, tzedek], you shall follow, that you may live and inherit the land that Adonai your God is giving you.

Hebrews 7:1-2  For this Melchizedek [מלכי צדק, Malchi-Tzedek], king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, King of Righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace.

Jeremiah 33:15-16  In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous branch [צמח צדקה, tzemach tzedakah] to spring up for David, and He shall execute justice [משפט, mishpat] and righteousness [צדקה, tzedakah] in the land. In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is the name by which it will be called: “Adonai Our Righteousness [יהוה צדקני, Adonai Tzidkeini].”

 Verse 7

Zechariah 9:9  Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; righteous [צדיק, Tzadik] and having salvation is He, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. (Compare Revelation 19:11-16)

1 John 2:1 (CJB)  My children, I am writing you these things so that you won’t sin. But if anyone does sin, we have Yeshua the Messiah, the Tzaddik, who pleads our cause with the Father.
