In this amazing Torah portion, we consider several unique features in the Torah scroll. But the most important thing we discuss is why God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his only son, Isaac. Or did He? What did God actually tell Abraham to do with Isaac? Answering this question makes all the difference in our understanding of this event that is so central to the Scriptures.
Genesis 18:9 They said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “She is in the tent.”
אליו (ei’layiv)
איו (a’yo) = “where is he?”
Genesis 19:33 So they made their father drink wine that night. And the firstborn went in and lay with her father. He did not know when she lay down or when she arose.
ובקומה (uv’kumah)
Genesis 21:6 And Sarah said, “God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh over me.”
צחק (tzechak)
ק = 100
ח = 8
צ = 90
Genesis 22:2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as an offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”
והעלהו שם לעלה
(1st occurrence) Genesis 2:6 And a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground.
שחט (shachat) = “slaughter”
זבח (zevach) = “sacrifice”
קרבן (korban) = “burnt offering”
עלה (olah) = “go up”
