Psalm 30 is one of the most popular in the Book of Psalms. David composed it for the future dedication of the Temple. But this sparks a question: what is the Temple mentioned nowhere in the psalm? But David does talk about how he was healed from a near-fatal illness. So what does that have to do with the Temple? Likewise, what did Yeshua’s body have to do with the Temple? Several clues run through this psalm that connect to form a beautiful picture of Messiah, His death, and resurrection. Come along as we dive into one of David’s most beautiful and mystical psalms.
Of David. A psalm, a song for dedication of the house.
מזמור(mizmor) שיר(shir) חנכה (chanukah)
1-3 I will raise You up, Adonai, for You have drawn me up and have not let my foes rejoice over me. 2 Adonai my God, I cried out to You, and You healed me.
שוע (shava) vs. צעק (tza’ak)
3 Adonai, You have brought up my soul from the grave. You restored me to life from among those who go down to the pit.
שאול (Sheol)
4-5 Sing to Adonai, O you His beloved ones, and give thanks on recalling His holiness. 5 For His anger is but for a moment; life is His will. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.
חיים ברצונו (chaim bir’tzono)
6-10 As for me, I said in my time of ease, “I shall never be shaken.” 7 By Your will, Adonai, You made my strength a mountain. You hid Your face; I panicked! 8 To You, Adonai, I cried, and to the Lord I pleaded: 9 “What profit is there in my blood, if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise You? Will it tell of Your faithfulness? 10 Hear, Adonai, and be merciful to me! Adonai, be my Helper!”
שלו (shalu) = “quiet ease”
11-12 You have turned for me my mourning into dancing. You have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, 12 that my glory may sing Your praise and not be silent. Adonai my God, I will give thanks to You forever!

Ephesians 4:8-10 Therefore it says, “When He ascended on high hHe led a host of captives, and He gave gifts to men.” (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that He had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? He who descended is the One who also ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.) [Quoting Psalm 68:18]

Exodus 33:5 For Adonai had said to Moses, “Say to the people of Israel, ‘You are a stiff-necked people; if for a moment [רגע, rega] I should go up among you, I would consume you. So now take off your ornaments, that I may know what to do with you.’”

John 2:17-22 His disciples remembered that it was written, ‘Zeal for Your house will consume me.” So the Judeans said to Him, “What sign do You show us for doing these things?” Yeshua answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Judeans then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” But He was speaking about the temple of His body. When therefore He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Yeshua had spoken.
Mark 15:29 And those who passed by derided Him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days…”
Hebrews 10:19-20 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Yeshua, by the new and living way that He opened for us through the curtain, that is, through His flesh…
