Psalms 20 and 21 are closely related. Whereas Psalm 20 is a prayer for the king’s victory as he marches into battle, Psalm 21 is a hymn of praise at his victorious return. In this short lesson, we make several comparisons between these two psalms and look at how the Hebrew teaches an important lesson about the danger of misplaced desire.
To the conductor. A Psalm of David.
1-2 O Adonai, in (p) Your strength the king rejoices, and in (s) Your salvation how greatly he exults! 2 You have given him (s) his heart’s desire and have not withheld the (p) request of his lips. Selah
תאוה (ta’avah)
תועבה (to’eivah) = “abomination”
3-7 For You preceded him with blessings of goodness [or “of the good one”]; You placed a crown of fine gold upon his head. 4 He asked life of You; You gave it to him, length of days forever and ever. 5 His glory is great through Your salvation; splendor and majesty You bestow on him. 6 For You make him most blessed forever; You make him glad with the joy of Your presence. 7 For the king trusts in Adonai, and through the steadfast love of Elyon he shall not be moved.
8-12 Your (p) hand will find out all Your enemies; Your (s) right hand will find out those who hate You. 9 You will make them as a blazing oven when You appear. Adonai will swallow them up in His wrath, and fire will consume them. 10 You will destroy their seed from the earth, and their offspring from among the sons of Adam. 11 Though they plan evil against You, though they devise mischief, they will not succeed. 12 For You will put them to flight; You will aim at their faces with Your [bow]strings.
13 Be exalted, O Adonai, in Your strength! We will sing and chant Your power.
A brief comparison of Psalms 20 & 21:
Psalm 20 Psalm 21
4 May He grant you your heart’s desire
2 You have given him his heart’s desire
… and fulfill all Your plans!
11 Though they plan evil against You,
5 May we shout for joy over Your salvation,
6 ..you make him glad with the joy of Your presence
1 …and in Your salvation how greatly he exults!
5 His glory is great through your salvation;
…May Adonai fulfill all your petitions!
2 You have not withheld the request of his lips.
6 … He will answer him from His holy heaven with the saving might of His right hand.
8 …Your right hand will find out those who hate You.
7 … we trust in the name of Adonai our God.
7 For the king trusts in Adonai
8 They collapse and fall…
11 …though they devise mischief, they will not succeed.
12 For You will put them to flight;
… but we rise and stand upright.
13 …We will sing and praise Your power.
9 O Adonai, save the king! May He answer us when we call.
1 O Adonai, in Your strength the king rejoices
7 For the king trusts in Adonai
