“Church” – The Most Misunderstood Word in the Bible (Part 1)
Our first discussion in this series deals with what I believe to be the most misunderstood word used in religious circles today. Most people think that the “church” is something that started in the New Testament. Some think that a ‘church’ is a building. I could fill this page listing the misunderstandings that people have about this confusing word – and it IS a confusing word! However, there was no such confusion in the original biblical languages of Hebrew and Greek. This two-part teaching will help clarify the concepts that have been clouded by the word C-H-U-R-C-H.

Episode 1 – “Church” (Pt.1)
εκκλησια (ekkleisia) = קהל (kahal)
εκκλησια: “a convened assembly of the people”
קהל: (v.) “to summon” / (n.) “assembly / congregation”
Deuteronomy 10:4 “And Adonai gave me the two tablets of stone written with the finger of God, and on them were all the words that Adonai had spoken with you on the mountain out of the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly.”

#1 – Genesis 28:3 “God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a kahal of peoples.”
#2 – Genesis 35:11 “And God said to him, ‘I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a kahal of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come from your own body.’”
#3 – Genesis 48:4 “…and said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a kahal of peoples and will give this land to your offspring after you for an everlasting possession.’”
