I always thank of the first letter, first word, first verse, first chapter, first book (Genesis) like I think of the “Big Bang” – everything explodes out of a tiny singularity. In this lesson we briefly discuss that singularity and focus in on the first word of Genesis – בראשית. It contains wonders!
Genesis 1:1 בראשׁית ברא אלהים את השׁמים ואת הארץ
בראשׁית
בר אשׁית = “I have prepared” + “a son”
ב ראשׁ ית = “first house” + 410
בראשׁית
ברית = “covenant” + אש = “fire”
ברא שׁית = “He created” + “six”
בראשׁית ברא אלהים את השׁמים ואת הארץ
א = אלף
aleph = “lord, master”
eleph = 1,000
והארץ היתה תהו ובהו וחשך על פני תהום
:ורוח אלהים מרחפת על פני המים
“The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep,
and the spirit of Elohim was moving over the surface of the waters.”
ויאמר אלהים… = “And God said…”
…יהי אור ויהי אור… = “… ‘Let there be light’, and there was light.’”
2,000 years of nothingness
2,000 years of Torah
2,000 years of Messiah
REFERENCES
b.Talmud, Avodah Zarah 9a – The world is destined to exist for six thousand years: the first two thousand years were of nothingness; the second two thousand years were of Torah: the third two thousand years should have been the days of Messiah, but because of our sins which are numerous, [the years] that have gone from [the Messianic era] have gone.
