I have yet to meet a Christian who, when asked, can point to a place in the Bible where the word ‘gospel’ is defined. Of course, they can point to verses that support their idea of what the gospel is, but ask them to point to at the Bible’s definition of the gospel and they are completely at a loss… at least, that has been my experience. So how about you?Can you answer the question? Furthermore, why is the ‘gospel’ the Messiah and His disciples proclaimed seem so different from the one Paul proclaimed? Could there be two “gospels”?! And while we’re at it, what exactly is ‘preaching’? Especially ‘gospel preaching’? These are profound and foundational questions that we will address is this episode of Pardon My Jargon.
ευαγγελιον (euangelion) = “good news”
בשורה (b’sorah) = “news” (usually good)
The Gospel of the Kingdom
Luke 16:16 – Up to the time of John there were the Torah and the Prophets. Since then the Gospel of the Kingdom of God has been proclaimed…
Matthew 3:1-2 – Now in those days John the Immerser came, proclaiming in the wilderness of Judea, saying, “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”
Matthew 4:12,17 – Now when Yeshua heard that John had been taken into custody, He withdrew into Galilee… From that time Yeshua began to proclaim and say, “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”
Matthew 4:23 – Yeshua was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people. [+ 9:35 / 10:5-7]
Paul’s Gospel
1 Corinthians 15:1-8 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I proclaimed to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I proclaimed to you, unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that…
… After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep. Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also.
Gospel of the Kingdom = “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is now!”
Paul’s Gospel =
Q: How do we reconcile these two “gospels”?
Romans 3:1-2 Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? Great in every respect. First of all, that they were entrusted with the oracles of God.
Romans 9:4-5 …who are Israelites, to whom belongs the adoption as sons, and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Torah and the temple service and the promises, whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Messiah according to the flesh, who is over all. God be blessed forever! Amen.
Jewish Advantages:
GENTILE DISADVANTAGES:
The Gospel of the Kingdom has meaning only for a prepared people – the Jewish people. Paul’s Gospel is for a people who do not know their right hand from their left.
Matthew 24:14 “This Gospel of the Kingdom shall be proclaimed in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.”
Revelation 14:6-7 And I saw another angel flying in mid-heaven, having the everlasting gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth, and to every nation and tribe and tongue and people; and he said with a loud voice, “Fear God, and give Him glory, because the hour of His judgment has come; worship Him who made the heaven and the earth and sea and springs of waters.”
REFERENCES:
Luke 18:13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!”
Isaiah 61:1 The spirit of the Lord Adonai is upon me, because Adonai has anointed me to bring good news[בשר, basar] to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.
Galatians 1:6-9 I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Messiah, for a different gospel; which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Messiah. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should proclaim to you a gospel contrary to what we have proclaimed to you, he is to be accursed! As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is proclaiming to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!
