This is the first “teaching psalm” (maskil) in the book of Psalms, and it teaches us how not to be a horse or a mule. Sound strange? You may be surprised how much we all tend to act like horses and mules! But this psalm also teaches us how to be a human being in our walk with God. In this psalm, we also learn what the word we typically translate as “prayer” really means.
A Maskil of David.
משכיל
1-4 Contented is the one whose transgression is borne away, whose sin is covered. 2 Contented is the man against whom Adonai counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. 3 For when I remained deaf, my bones wasted away through my groaning (or ‘roaring’) all day long. 4 For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me. My sap was dried up as by the summer heat. Selah
חטאת (chatat) = “sin/error”
עון (avon) = “guilt/iniquity”
פשע (pesha) = “transgression”
5 I acknowledged my sin to You, and I did not cover my iniquity. When I merely said, “I will confess my transgressions to Adonai,” You had already borne away the iniquity of my sin. Selah
כסה (casah) = “cover (so as to conceal from view)”
6-7 [For this every godly person prays to You at a time when You may be found: only that the rush of great waters will not reach him.] 7 You are a hiding place for me. You preserve me from trouble. You surround me with songs of deliverance [through escape]. Selah
פלל (palal) = “to judge/see accurately”
פלט (paleit) = “deliverance [through escape]”
8-11 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go. I will counsel you with My eye. 9 Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, ornamented with muzzle and bridle so that they do not come near you. 10 Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in Adonai. 11 Be glad in Adonai, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!
