Psalm 29 follows a menorah (i.e., a chiastic) pattern and mentions “the voice of Adonai” seven times in the middle. What do these mentions of Adonai’s voice teach us about the speaker’s location? Which direction is He heading? How are destruction and new life blended in this psalm? How do the four opening lines contrast with the four closing lines?
Of David.
1-2
Bring to Adonai, O heavenly beings,
Bring to Adonai glory and strength.
Bring to Adonai the glory due His name;
Worship Adonai in the majesty of holiness.
3-9
The voice of Adonai is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, Adonai, over many waters.
The voice of Adonai is powerful;
The voice of Adonai is full of majesty.
The voice of Adonai breaks the cedars; Adonai breaks the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox.
The voice of Adonai flashes forth flames of fire.
The voice of Adonai shakes the wilderness; Adonai shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
The voice of Adonai makes the deer give birth and strips the forests bare, and in His temple all cry, “Glory!”
10-11
Adonai sits enthroned over the flood;
Adonai sits enthroned as king forever.
May Adonai give strength to His people!
May Adonai bless His people with peace!
בני אלים (b’nei eilim) = lit. “sons of powers”
