When Yeshua was asked what was the greatest commandment, He answered, “Shema, Israel, Adonai is our God! Adonai is one!” (Mark 12:29) But do we really know what the word ‘shema’ really means? Does it only mean to “hear”? Or does it mean something more. This short lesson will open up new insights into your understanding of this foremost commandment.
Deuteronomy 6:4 Hear, O Israel: Adonai our God, Adonai is one.
:שמע ישראל יהוה אלהינו יהוה אחד
Mark 12:28-31 And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that He answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” Yeshua answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: Adonai our God, Adonai is one. And you shall love Adonai your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
