Christians constantly refer to Messiah’s death as an atonement. But what is atonement? (And what does atonement have to do with the mercy seat?) Does the Bible tell us that Messiah atoned for our sins? Or did He accomplish something much more significant? This is a teaching that you cannot afford to miss.
כפר (caphar) = “to cover”
1st – Genesis 6:14 Make yourself an ark of gopher wood. Make rooms in the ark and cover it inside and out with pitch.
2nd – Genesis 32:20 “And you shall say, ‘Moreover, your servant Jacob is behind us.’” For he thought, “I may appease him [lit. “cover his face”] with the present that goes ahead of me, and afterward I shall see his face. Perhaps he will accept me.”
3rd – Exodus 21:30 If a ransom is imposed on him, then he shall give for the redemption of his life whatever is imposed on him.
כפרת (n.) (caporet) = “a cover”
Exodus 25:17 (CJB) “You are to make a cover for the ark out of pure gold…”
Exodus 25:17 (KJV) “And thou shalt make a mercy-seat of pure gold…”
Romans 5:11 (KJV) And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.
καταλλαγη = “reconciliation”
Hebrews 10:4,11 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins… And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.
Romans 11:26-27 And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written, “The Deliverer will come from Zion, He will banish ungodliness from Jacob and this will be My covenant with them when I take away their sins.” [Isaiah 59:20]
John 1:29 The next day he saw Yeshua coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
1 John 3:5 You know that He appeared in order to take away sins, and in Him there is no sin.
